That number includes about 2 million septic systems in North Carolina alone. The number of septic systems increase every year as result of continuous urban and suburban sprawl, rural development, and the high cost of central sewer systems. Properly installed and maintained septic systems are environmentally friendly, safe for public health, and may provide a permanent wastewater treatment solution. It is important for all NC citizens served by septic systems to be aware of and practice proper care and maintenance of this important component of their home infrastructure. That is why Governor Cooper recognized September 16-20, 2019, as SepticSmart Week in North Carolina. SepticSmart Week is an annual event focused on educating homeowners and communities on the proper care and maintenance of their septic systems. For more information, please visit the EPA's website .
